"...At the beginning of the 1300's, with the spreading of the Minor Order of the Franciscans, a convent of these monks also arrived in Pienza. The Monastery of St. Francis was certainly the most important religious and cultural institution in old Corsignano, at least until the radical transformation of the city, which occurred from 1459, by Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini), who was born here in 1405. On his first visit to Corsignano as Pope, Piccolomini celebrated a solemn mass at St. Francis pienza italy , it evidently being the most important church of the hamlet.
The only precise information that we have about the life of the Monastery, comes from the 1500's and are details by the caretaker-priest Domenico Gabrielli who tells about the violence with which the undisciplined soldiers treated the convent and the church during the Sienese War.
The poor brother tells that in 1555, the soldiers "wrecked the cantina and upturned the wine, rampaging, burning clothing as well as the timbers", and he also informs us that following this they "remained without utensils and furniture but recommenced bit by bit, with the diligence of the brothers and the compassion of their benefactors, to recover" pienza hotel . In 1634, St Francis hosted the Provincial Congregation with solemnity, and it was an occasion for "preaching, Latin prayers and beautiful music". A few years later, by a Papal Bull, the 'little convent' was suppressed, the Franciscans were forced to leave. But the population were not pleased and many of the people became enraged, and were successful in returning the brothers to St. Francis in 1658. In 1405 Enea Silvio was born of the noble Piccolomini family in the medieval fortified village of Corsignano. His family, which had long played an active political and economic role in Siena, had been forced to take exile in Val d'Orcia in the mid-1300s hotel pienza .
Young Enea soon proved to be bright, curious and an avid traveller hotel siena . He quickly cund his way into the humanistical circles in numerous Italian cities, including Siena, Florence, Padua, Ferrara and Milan. A true Renaissance mar he became an expect in classical and legal matters, studied literature, wrole poetry, was a respected diplomat and an exquisite speaker. At forty, having already enjoyed an intense and exciting life, he undertook a brilliant ecclesiastical career and was soon appointed bishop of Trieste, then of Siena, then Cardinal, and finally pope in 1458, when he assumed the name Pius II. The new pope was an adamant admirer of natural beauty and vestiges of antiquity.
The humanistic ideal of reviving classical culture and creating a new harmony between nature and history seemed within reach. Pius II always remained enamoured of his childhood home, of the wide-open spaces in Val d'Orcia and Monte Amiata, which he rendered so poetically in his "Commentarii". He decide that Corsignano should serve as a loboratory where the ideal city might become a reality. Thus, thanks to "the fondeness" in his heart and his dream of perfection" (as described by the Italian poet Giovanni Pascoli) Pienza was born as Pope Pius' ideal city hotel val d'orcia . It was the outcome of the Pope's dream, Leon Battista Alberti's theories and the plan drawn up by Rossellino during just over three years, from 1459 to 1462

Once in Pienza:
All guests who has a reservation in our Hotel are allowed to enter the historical centre (Corso il Rossellino 26, Pienza) by car to the Hotel only to load and/or unload the luggage. The Hotel does not have any parking places, however the Hotel receptionist will be happy to show a detailed map of Pienza and all the free parking areas. These are placed outside of the historical centre still within walking distance from/to the Hotel.
Alternatively, Hotel can arrange a valet parking. We suggest to book this option in advance.
